Aurora Borealis
1 AM, 35 degrees below zero! Fairbanks, Alaska, February. We were lucky to see this great display of the Northern Lights on the second night of our trip to Fairbanks. The display lasted for over an hour. Even though we stayed for another 4 days, we didn't see another show like this one.
WWII Warbirds over Catalina Mountains
USAF show at D-M Air Force Base in Tucson.
Barrel Racer
White Stallion Ranch near Tucson. This rider was practicing for an upcoming rodeo. Knocking over a barrel results in a lower score.
Toys For Tots Fire Truck
Each Christmas season the Toys For Tots organization sends this decorated fire truck around Tucson to collect toys for underprivileged children. There is even a working model train set under the side.
Driftwood and Drifted Sand
As I was looking down from our hotel window, I spotted this piece of driftwood surrounded by rippled sand. I thought it made a nice study in textures. A year later we visited the same hotel and the driftwood was still there, but the sand was flat and there was an old tire next to the wood. Ugh!
F-4 Mandala
Looking up the tail end of an F-4 engine. The light from the flash emphasized the colors of the metallic parts. This was taken at the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson.
Two Blondes
White Stallion Ranch, near Tucson. The model was a working ranch hand.
Folklorico Dancer
At the Gaslight Theater Mariachi Show in Tucson.
Bellagio Fountains
We love to watch the Bellagio fountain shows. Usually we watch from above, in our room, but this evening I wanted a different view so I walked down to the "Strip".
On the Train to Fairbanks
Locals who ride the train between Anchorage and Fairbanks are probably pretty bored by the trip. This young man seemed to be wishing the trip was over.
Bouquet with Bellagio Ceiling
These bouquets are scattered about the Bellagio lobby, and echo the colors of the glass ceiling.
The Best Kind of Ice!
'Nuff said!
Gladiola Leaves
Another instance of backlighting on a mundane subject intensifying colors and attracting my attention.
Molten (not Moulton) Barn, (Visual Pun)
This is the iconic Moulton Barn in Grand Teton National Park. I thought this was funny. Nobody else gets it. Or they don't like puns. Oh, well...
Monarch Butterfly on Child's Hand
Taken at Ardenwood Farms in Fremont, CA, where monarch butterflies hibernate.
Grand Teton View from Jackson Lake Lodge
This is the first thing you see when you enter the main lobby of the Jackson Lake Lodge. It takes your breath away. For some reason, the view from inside seems even more impressive than from outside. Perhaps it reminds you of the scale of the landscape.
Fashion Shoot
We saw this scene unfolding from our room on a cliff above Bandon Beach. After the woman posed, the photographer changed into a wedding dress and had his picture taken in a similar way. I spoke with him and found out he uses the photos to make an annual calendar which is used for fund raising.
Bellagio Fountain Rainbow
I exaggerated the colors, of course.
Historic Strategic Bombers
Pima Air and Space Museum, Tucson, AZ. These bombers cover the period from the end of WWII to the present. (B-36, B-47, and B-52)
Put 'em Up!
Anthropomorphizing a bit? Bully saguaro!
Skeletal Saguaro
The structure of the saguaro under the flesh fascinates me.
San Pellegrino Lineup
I had a challenge to make a photograph with shadows playing an important role in the composition. Ann, my spotter, saw this scene in a Las Vegas restaurant.
Fountain Spectrum
This is a little more subtle than my other fountain rainbow. I like that the entire spectrum is represented.
Changing Pastures
Taken just off the road near Bridgeport, CA. These ranch hands were encouraging the cattle to cross a small ravine. Eventually, the cattle crossed and continued to their destination.
Bellagio Venetian Glass Ceiling
Straight overhead in the lobby of the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas.
Sopapillas
My favorite food shot. And, they were delicious!
Desserts, Santa Cruz
It was Ann's idea to place the flower in the glass, which made for a very pretty table scene.
Ferns and Redwood Stump
I liked the textural and color contrast between the ferns and the weathered redwood stump.
Gnarly Tree
The gnarly branches silhouetted against the stormy sky give this photo an aura of foreboding,
Wood Fired Pizza
Really good pizza in Estes park, Colorado.
Cell Phone Photographers
Bubble, Jackson Square, New Orleans
A busker was making huge soap bubbles in Jackson Square. I liked the reflected city scape.
Bubble Observer
Another Jackson Square bubble.
