  • Ruby Beach Sunset

    Ruby Beach Sunset

This view is from one of the resting points on the slightly long and somewhat steep trail to the beach.

  • Cape Flattery Trail Viewpoint

    Cape Flattery Trail Viewpoint

A trail reminiscent of "Lord of the Rings" scenery leads to this overlook. I found the spot to be mysterious and moody, while simultaneously being lush and lovely.

  • Drake's Bay

    Drake's Bay

I caught this scene at the last light, which bathed the cliffs in gold.

  • Driftwood Window, Rialto Beach

    Driftwood Window, Rialto Beach

Another window-like object framing a scene, this time a seascape.

  • Amazing Sunset, Bandon Beach

    Amazing Sunset, Bandon Beach

This wonderfully intense pink light lasted for about 30 seconds.

  • Crashing Waves, Crazy Photographer

    Crashing Waves, Crazy Photographer

This photographer ignored the "Do Not Go Beyond This Sign" warnings. I was waiting for a sneaker wave to wash him out to sea, but he made it back up to the parking area. It would be great if I could see the photos he took, but I didn't get his name.

  • Churning Surf through Elephant Rock

    Churning Surf through Elephant Rock

I like backlighting on anything that's a little translucent. In this case, the warm light from the setting sun gave the misty surf the appearance of boiling gold.

  • Setting Sun, Ruby Beach

    Setting Sun, Ruby Beach

It took some maneuvering to catch the setting sun in this notch before it dropped below the horizon.

  • Sunset Near Santa Cruz

    Sunset Near Santa Cruz

I liked how the two people near the end of the beach gave this scene a sense of scale.

  • Bandon Beach Driftwood with Sea Stacks

Bandon Beach Driftwood with Sea Stacks

A wide angle lens helped make this rather puny branch look quite immense.

  • Sunset Fading at Ruby Beach

    Sunset Fading at Ruby Beach

Further maneuvering got me this shot with a person to add some scale and interest to the scene.

  • Contemplating the Sunset

    Contemplating the Sunset

Again, more moving around produced this scene that included a contemplative man enjoying the beach.

  • Beachcomber

    Beachcomber

I like to photograph through window-like objects to emphasize something in the background. Without the beachcomber this photo would be terribly dull.

  • Battery Point Lighthouse with Full Moon

Battery Point Lighthouse with Full Moon

Taken at early dawn, Crescent City, CA.

  • Morning Glories, Big Sur

    Morning Glories, Big Sur

I was able to get the focus sharp all the way from the flowers to the distant coastline.

  • Shore Acres, the Classic Postcard View

Shore Acres, the Classic Postcard View

Layered rock being beaten by relentless surf is the essence of Shore Acres State Park, Oregon.

  • Orchid, Wine Glass, and Lighthouse

    Orchid, Wine Glass, and Lighthouse

Ann's idea to put this orchid in a glass inspired me to try different compositions. I felt that this was the most successful.

  • Santa Cruz Lighthouse Through Restaurant Window

Santa Cruz Lighthouse Through Restaurant Window

The window and the branches frame the lighthouse to give an otherwise dull image a more interesting composition.

  • McWay Falls with Naked Lady Flowers

McWay Falls with Naked Lady Flowers

Located about 30 miles south of Carmel, McWay Falls is one of the most photogenic spots on the Big Sur coast. The water drops about 80 feet directly into the Pacific. A photo similar to this was used as the cover for an AAA California map. The flowers make the image a little more unique than typical, and the late light gives the landscape a nice, warm glow.
